See & Do

There are many different activities and historic sites within easy reach of the house from golf right next door to a plethora of houses and gardens, churches and cathedrals, art galleries, and fun stuff for the kids. The 95-mile-long Jurassic coast, iconic Stonehenge and the cultural City of Bath are all close by offering further day trips and all the rural pursuits you would expect are easily available with lots of pretty towns and villages for pub lunches en-route and a spot of antique shopping. This is a popular area of England to visit but happily much of Somerset remains delightfully old-fashioned and rural.

Let us know your interests and we will arrange a wonderful schedule of fun activities & visits for you and your guests or use our recommendation pages to curate your visit.

Local Activities

Close to Newton Surmaville, you’ll find a wide range of local activities for visitors to enjoy. From exploring the stunning landscapes of the Jurassic Coast to visiting historic sites such as Stonehenge, there is something for everyone to experience. Outdoor enthusiasts can partake in hiking, cycling, and water sports, while those interested in culture can visit museums, art galleries, and local markets. Additionally, the region hosts various events throughout the year, including food festivals, music concerts, and traditional fairs. Whether you're looking for a relaxing day out or an adventure-filled weekend, Dorset and Somerset offer a diverse array of activities to suit every interest.

Fun for the Kids

Whether your children like caving, rock climbing, fossil hunting or tree climbing, if they like fast cars, steam trains or aircraft carriers; or they simply like walking in the countryside, enjoying what nature has to offer, there are plenty of activities within an hours drive. If it's roar-some adventure they are after, then Longleat is for you!

Estates & Gardens

Somerset is famous for its gardens and there are over 400 open to the public throughout the country.

Whether you like formal topiary or wild flower meadows, Dorset and Somerset have gardens that will inspire and please you.  Often, they sit around, or next to, a staggeringly old building, such as Cothay Manor, a 15th century medieval manor house which acts as a beautiful backdrop to the contemporary plantings.  More and more of these gardens now offer tea and delicious home-made cake, so it is easy to while away an afternoon.

Historic Sites

This area has a wonderful mix of the old and the new.  The ancient Forde Abbey and Wells Cathedral are exquisite examples of beautifully preserved old buildings.  Travel south into Dorset and you will find Simon Gudgeon’s stunning Sculpture by the Lakes which combines contemporary sculpture with the natural landscape or visit the Hauser & Wirth gallery in Bruton which hosts some very avantgarde artists in an old English setting.

Explore Dorset & Somerset

Newton Surmaville sits on the border of Dorset and Somerset and, as such, is well placed to pick the best from both counties. The coast line of Dorset, due south of the house is stunning and has all manner of seaside activities to enjoy. The rural interior is more pastoral, think Hardy or Austen novels, indeed many were filmed in the area. Either way, there is plenty to do and with Bristol and Bath no more than 90 minutes away, the lure of the bright lights are easily satisfied.

On the Estate
