If you don't want to venture too far, at the house, you’ll find a trampoline, football, croquet, fishing, kayaks and a games room.
Longleat Safari Park
Just over half an hour from the house, enjoy a day out like no other.
Did you know that Longleat was the first Safari Park to open outside of Africa in 1966? Home to over 120 species, you can see their amazing animals by car, foot, train, bus and boat.
The Tunnel Tree Tops
24 miles south of Newton Surmaville is The Tunnel Tree Tops, an award-winning high ropes and zip wire adventure centre. Perfect for all the family as it caters for 6+ year olds with a minimum height of 1.2 metres and under 115kgs. A visit here could be combined with a walk along the Jurassic Coast as this World Heritage site is only 2 miles away.
Wimbleball Lake & Exmoor
45 miles west of Newton Surmaville lies Wimbleball Lake, nestled amongst the rolling hills of Exmoor National Park which offers all sorts of water-based activities such as kayaking, paddleboarding, sailing etc. A visit here could be combined with a visit to the Tarr Steps on Exmoor. Tarr Steps, the ancient clapper bridge dating back to around 1000 BC, crosses the River Barle and is one of Somerset’s most magical places. Paddle in the shallows, walk along the wooded bank or walk up Winsford Hill where you might catch a glimpse of the wild Exmoor ponies, or hear the call of the stonechat or even the grasshopper warbler.
Haynes Motor Museum
If planes, trains and automobiles are your thing, you could make a day of visiting the Haynes Motor Museum, just 10 miles north of Newton Surmaville.
Fleet Air Army Museum
Step inside the first British Concorde, experience the thrills of a working flight deck, and witness a dramatic air-sea rescue on the Aircraft Carrier Experience. This is an all-weather venue which means it’s a good thing for a rainy day.
Horse Riding
If you’d like to have a riding lesson, Pevlings Farm Riding Stables are 25 minutes away from the house and they specialise in teaching children, though they do have some larger horses for adults too.
Falconry
At Pitcombe Rock Falconry, the focus is on the rescue and rehabilitation of birds of prey. They are passionate about these birds and love to share their enthusiasm and knowledge. You can get up close and personal with a long-eared owl, learning how to handle it and ‘fly it’ or you can go the extreme and learn how to take a hawk hunting. If successful and your hawk catches a rabbit, you will be able to take it home for supper once the falconer has prepared it for you.
If you would prefer to stay on site, then we can arrange Falconry here at the house. Speak to Harriet for more information.
Watersports at Langport
Watersports at Langport, just 20 minutes away, on the River Parrett are very popular. You can kayak or canoe on the beautiful river as well as paddleboarding or choose wild swimming if you are feeling brave!
Wookey Hole Caves
Wookey Hole Caves are six miles south-east of Cheddar Gorge and a mile or so outside the town of Wells. Here you will find Wookey Hole which has a series of caves that were inhabited for 70,000 years. Plenty of adventure and fun for everyone including Adventure Golf, a 4D cinema show and lots of information on the fascinating story of Wookey Hole.
Cheddar Gorge
Cheddar Gorge is extraordinary. The gorge itself is spectacular with cliffs that rise above the road but there is so much more to the area. It is home to an incredible subterranean network of caves which you can explore in varying different ways, depending on your sense of adventure and appetite for cramped spaces!
On the Estate
Whether indoors or outdoors, there are numerous activities available for families both on and off the Estate. Children can roam the grounds and participate in team games, while indoor options such as the games centre or Cinema Room provide entertainment on rainy days.
